Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said Wednesday his party will vote against a Conservative non-confidence motion due to be tabled next week — giving the Liberal government enough votes to stay in power and avoid an imminent election.

Bloc candidate Louis-Philippe Sauvé won the LaSalle—Émard—Verdun riding with 28 per cent of the vote, holding off the Liberals and NDP in a tight race. Blanchet says the victory — which gives the Bloc its second seat on the Island of Montreal — demonstrates that voters have options outside of the Liberals.

Quebec Premier François Legault on Thursday urged the Bloc Québécois to help topple the federal Liberal government and trigger an election, saying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues to disrespect the will of the province.

Fed up with waiting for action on the issue of temporary immigration, Premier François Legault called on the Parti Québécois Thursday to pressure its federal cousins in the Bloc Québécois to bring down the Trudeau government.
